OMG: See the announcement below, and note that former Howard Dean manager Joe Trippi appears to be consulting for the campaign.
Duchy Trachtenberg, who served as Montgomery County Councilmember At-Large from 2006-2010, announced today her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Congress in Maryland's 6th Congressional District.
"The New 6th District Needs a New Kind of Representative"
Duchy Trachtenberg, who served as Montgomery County Councilmember At-Large from 2006-2010, announced today her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Congress in Maryland's 6th Congressional District.
"I am running for Congress because our political system is absolutely past the breaking point," Trachtenberg said. "Our budgets are busted, our infrastructure is abandoned, our natural resources are exhausted, our social safety net is devastated—and most of all, our children's and grandchildren's future is being squandered by politics as usual."
The new 6th District, whose boundaries have been adjusted to reflect population changes determined by the recent U.S. Census, includes parts of Frederick, Allegany, Garrett, Washington and Montgomery Counties.
"I represented nearly half of the new District as an At-Large Representative on the County Council," Duchy Trachtenberg said. "I'll work just as hard for all the people in the new 6th Congressional District."
Montgomery County is by far the largest portion of the new 6th District, with 265,979 residents or 48.19% of the total population.
Analysts agree that the new boundaries make the 6th District, which is currently represented by 10-term incumbent Roscoe Bartlett, highly competitive in 2012. An analysis by the Maryland Democratic Party found that Gov. Martin O’Malley got about 51 percent of the proposed district’s vote in 2010, and President Obama won 56.6 percent in 2008.
Trachtenberg said she looks forward to an energetic campaign that will highlight her record of political independence.
"I will win the Democratic nomination for Congress because the Annapolis insiders and old school politicians have already lost," Trachtenberg says. "They've lost touch with the voters, they've lost the confidence of the public, and they've lost the ability to put the people ahead of the powerful special interests."
"I'll fight in Washington for fiscal responsibility, tax fairness, jobs and health care, and common sense solutions that put people first."
On the Montgomery County Council, Trachtenberg, who served as chair of the Council's budget-making committee, championed fiscal responsibility and close scrutiny of county spending.
"I said that the clock has finally run out on the fantasy that government can spend without consequence, or make budget policy without discipline," Trachtenberg says. "I wasn't afraid to take on the special interests that have spent huge war chests to turn back the clock on fairness for seniors, children and working families."
Political strategist Joe Trippi will be advising the campaign, Trachtenberg says, and she will be assembling a campaign team and scheduling a formal announcement tour in the coming weeks.
