One Year Out: Maryland Democrats Rally The Troops // Exclusive Video & Photo Gallery!

About a month ago, Maryland Juice caught word of plans for a Democratic "One Year Out" Mega-Rally to fire up troops before the 2012 elections. Of course, the GOP mocked Maryland Juice's effort and called it "desperate" on Twitter (see below):

For months I've been telling my friends concerned about Obama's re-election that it was silly to look at the early polling, because in a Presidential year (especially one like this), partisanship will eventually drive most of the votes back into a predictable place before November 2012. But still, I must admit, I was very curious to see whether the average Democrat would be fired up for next year. Judging by the hundreds of fed up voters that showed up at yesterday's rally, I'd say we're on the right track. See our video and photo coverage below, starting with this rally cry from Rep. Elijah Cummings:

Other speakers included Rep. Donna Edwards, who cleared her schedule to fire up area Democrats, along with DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Gov. Martin O'Malley, Senator Ben Cardin, County Executive Ike Leggett and Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis. Mr. Van Hollen was held up by his "deficit super-committee"duties.

John Fritze from The Baltimore Sun highlighted a few choice quotes from the evening:
"Next year is going to be one of the toughest national elections that we will face," Wasserman Schultz said in an address that focused largely on the presidential race. "In 2012, we need to send Barack Obama back to the White House ... and add more Maryland Democrats to the U.S. House of Representatives...."
"This is to bring out all the grass-roots supporters who have just been itching to get started," Maryland Democratic Party chair Yvette Lewis said of the rally. "This is a sleeping giant that is going to wake...."

"There are folks that are saying that we are not enthusiastic, but we have too much to fight for," Cummings told the crowd of several hundred. "It's important that you be able to say I was part of making a difference."

  1. You can just feel the rampant jealousy from the boys @ Red Maryland. The Republican Party in MD hasn't put that many people into a room since Mac Mathias was in the Senate (that's 1986, for you young people).
