Rebecca Lord: Rest in Peace // Longtime Silver Spring Activist & Democratic Politico Passed Away on Sunday

Yesterday, my friend Rebecca Lord passed away. She fought gracefully through a multi-year battle with cancer that came to a conclusion sometime last night. I first met the native Texan over six years ago when we both worked on Professor Jamie Raskin's upstart State Senate campaign. Rebecca was one of my earliest "political friends" (yes, they really do exist), but over the years became more than a mere political acquaintance. As I came to learn, not only did she share my excitement for politics, but also for traveling and food.

Nevertheless, I imagine that many people likely first met Rebecca through politics. Besides the Raskin campaign, she was a leader in the Greater Silver Spring Democratic Club and worked for numerous Democrats, including Sen. Ben Cardin and Montgomery County Councilmembers Roger Berliner and Nancy Floreen.

But politics aside, Rebecca was often the most vocal and outgoing presence in whatever room I shared with her. That should not surprise those who know her. Smart and passionate, Rebecca Lord expressed an equal love for both living life and also using your time here to improve life for others. When it came to the latter goal, she was certainly not shy. Rebecca did, after all, earn both a law degree and a doctorate in history and wasn't afraid to speak her mind or confront injustice. On her Facebook page two years ago, she posted a photo of herself holding a sign with the following message:
"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Keeping Rebecca's torch burning is probably the best way for me to honor her today:

Travel well, Rebecca Lord.
We'll keep the torch burning.

The funeral is on WED 7/18. Email me for information: david@marylandjuice.com

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made on Rebecca's behalf to:

Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington
1108 16th Street NW
Washington, DC 20036

Rebecca was a board member and very passionate about the issue.
