UPDATE: According to today's DNC schedule, three Marylanders are scheduled to speak tonight before President Bill Clinton takes the stage. You can watch the proceedings online.
  • U.S Senator Barbara Mikulski: 7-8 pm
  • Rep. Steny Hoyer: 8-9 pm
  • Rep. Chris Van Hollen: 9-10 pm

MARYLAND AMONG TOP 5 "POWERHOUSE" STATES IN CHARLOTTE: Today Charlotte, North Carolina played host to the first day of proceedings at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Maryland Dems should have a few reasons to keep tabs on what's happening in Charlotte this week. After all, Politico rated Maryland among the top five "powerhouse" states at the DNC this year (excerpt below):
POLITICO: All 50 states are represented in Charlotte, but they’re not equal in relevance.... For a state with just 10 electoral votes, solidly Democratic Maryland packs a serious punch.

It’s not just the five speakers that Maryland will put forth on the convention stage. The delegation features two top former labor leaders ... and several top congressional Democrats....

The Democrat cutting the highest profile in the delegation, however, is Gov. Martin O’Malley, the chairman of the Democratic Governors Association... And as a 2016 prospect, O’Malley is keeping an aggressive speaking schedule to other states’ breakfast meetings.
WATCH GOV. MARTIN O'MALLEY & REP. STENY HOYER'S DNC SPEECHES - Last night, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and Rep. Steny Hoyer spoke on the DNC convention's arena stage. Hoyer is the parliamentarian for the convention and gave brief remarks early in the evening. Gov. O'Malley, however, had a primetime speaking spot on an evening capped by an address from First Lady Michelle Obama. In addition to Hoyer and O'Malley, Rep. Donna Edwards, Rep. Chris Van Hollen and Sen. Barbara Mikulski are all slated to speak.

You can see the O'Malley and Hoyer's speeches below, along with a video kicking off the DNC's online coverage from Harold and Kumar.

MEET MARYLAND JUICE'S DNC CORRESPONDENT - JED MILLARD: Maryland Juice has a correspondent on the ground at the Democratic National Convention this week. We wanted to give a taste of the ground-view at the event, but from a young Maryland Democrat's perspective. Meet Jed Millard, a Democratic aide to Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Floreen. Jed is at the DNC with a goal of interviewing potential 2014 candidates for Maryland Governor, and we'll soon show the results of his sleuthing. But first, check out the DNC convention memes that Jed made before embarking on his trip to Charlotte. We also have some previews of his work below, including a quick social networking teaser for our chat with Howard County Executive Ken Ulman:

Jed will be live-tweeting from the event, using the Twitter hashtag #DNCjuice, but stay tuned for more info on our mysterious DNC correspondent and his attempts to interview Maryland politicos.

P.S. - What did you think of Governor O'Malley's speech? Leave a note in the comments if you have a thought!
