The Republicans have nominated former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino to take on incumbent Democrat Ben Cardin for the U.S. Senate this November. Mr. Bongino may have a near-impossible challenge unless he can demonstrate a sudden ability to raise tons of cash. His latest FEC reports show roughly $16,000 cash on hand through mid-March. Senator Cardin, on the other hand, has issued a press release announcing $2.1 million in his war chest, so far:
Press Release
U.S. SENATOR BEN CARDIN REPORTS $2.1 MILLION
CASH ON HAND AT START OF GENERAL ELECTION
Baltimore, Maryland - U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) announced today that he is starting the general election with more than $2.1 million cash on hand after a successful first quarter of 2012 raising close to $820,000 and a primary campaign that included significant television, radio and print advertising. Seventy-five percent of the nearly 2,700 individual contributions made to Senator Cardin's re-election during the first three months of 2012 were from Marylanders.
“I am so appreciative of the support I have received from Marylanders throughout this campaign. These are still tough times for our nation, which is why this level of support is especially humbling. It's also why I continue to fight hard to keep us on a path toward economic recovery, job growth and fiscal discipline,” said Senator Cardin.
Senator Cardin’s most recent filings with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC), show that he raised $232,534 in the period of March 14-31, 2012, and $587,356 in the period of January 1-March 13, 2012.
